Anthema: 100% plant-based spot in Athens
Both a store and a restaurant
Anthema is a 2-in-1 concept. On one hand, they produce and sell a range of products from granola to nut butters. On the other hand, it’s a 100% plant-based restaurant mostly known for its incredible selection of cakes and other sweet treats.
Anthema aims to minimise the processing of raw ingredients to preserve their nutritional value and taste. Some of their desserts are even raw. They also have several gluten-free options.
Anthema is officially certified by the Vegan Society!
Where to find Anthema in Athens?
There are 2 locations in Greece currently, the Athens address is 25 Mitropoleos Street, in the heart of Athens.
They are open every day from 9am to 10pm.
Anthema menu
Although Anthema is mostly a vegan patisserie, they are open all day long and offer both a breakfast and savoury lunch/dinner menu.
The breakfast options include porridge, chia pudding and superfood smoothie bowls. The savoury dishes range from burrito to fancy avocado toast with vegan mozza, or even vegan burgers, pasta and salads.
Finally, the patisserie menu is Anthema’s signature. The wide choice of cakes and sweet treats makes it hard to choose what you’re in the most in the mood for!
Tiramisu, chocolate cake, brownie, cheesecake, not to mention the mini cookies and other bites… everything looks incredibly tempting.
If you visit Anthema around Christmas, you’ll also find chocolate truffles as well as the vegan versions of the traditional Christmas biscuits, such as the Melomakarona.
You can find their menu online here, however they sometimes make different vegan cakes to what’s on the menu. Either way, you’ll definitely find something that tickles your fancy.
Anthema vegan cakes: what should you try?
I visited Anthema twice (trust me, I would love to try every single cake but in my short time in Athens it’s not really reasonable). Here’s what I tried and would absolutely recommend. Hopefully this will make your choice a little easier!
The tiramisu
I’m pretty sure it’s one of their most popular desserts, rightly so. It’s not everyday that you find vegan tiramisu, so I absolutely wanted to try and it really hit the spot.
Their vegan tiramisu has the exact same soft and gooey, almost creamy texture as the original version. I could taste a hint of espresso taste but it wasn’t overpowering. I would love to know how they make it and which vegan mascarpone they use, because it was absolutely phenomenal.
The tiramisu costs 5€, not exactly cheap but it was worth every cent and the portion was rather generous.
The chocolate & hazelnut cake
One to die for, especially if you’re a chocolate lover. It’s not very gooey, it’s more on the sticky and thick side which makes it very, very filling.
But it has an incredibly rich chocolate taste and a great texture combo with the crunchy hazelnut base. It’s even nicer if you enjoy it with a coffee. This one was 4.50€.
Mini bites
As I visited around Christmas, it would have been a shame not to try some of the seasonal treats, so I bought a handful of truffles, Melomakarona and shortbreads to take away.
They were all delicious, but my favourites were the Melomakarona, which were like soft, chewy mini cookies. T
he mini bites are between 0.60€ and 1.20€, it can add up if you buy a bunch of them, but it was great to be able to try the traditional Christmas goodies, or at least close veganised versions.
To sum it up
Any plant-based foodie visiting Athens should absolutely visit Anthema for an afternoon treat! If you’re doing some shopping around Plaka or doing some sightseeing in the area, make a stop there when you get hungry. Although, if you’re not, as soon as you lay your eyes on the cakes you’ll be in the mood for a sweet treat.
The prices are a little high, but we have to consider the fact that it’s a small business making everything by hand, on a small scale. I didn’t really fancy the breakfast and savory menu, but I think the cakes are really worth it for an occasional treat.
