Saucony Endorphin Speed 4 unsponsored review

After completely wearing out my Saucony Endorphin Speed 3, I replaced them with the newer version. Here’s my honest review of the Saucony Endorphin Speed 4 after over 300km: what I like, how they fit in my shoe rotation and are they worth the price?

Key facts about the Saucony Endorphin Speed 4

Here are the key features of the Saucony Endorphin Speed 4:

  • Midsole Technology: The Endorphin Speed 4 retains the PWRRUN PB foam, known for its lightweight and responsive cushioning, providing excellent energy return. It also features a re-engineered winged nylon plate that offers stability and support while maintaining flexibility, suitable for both speed work and longer runs.

  • SPEEDROLL Technology: This design promotes a natural forward motion, making each stride feel smooth and propulsive, aiming to optimise running efficiency.

  • Upper mesh: The updated mesh upper offers a breathable, more accommodating fit with a slightly roomier toe box for comfort during longer runs. The improved fit is designed to securely hug the midfoot without being restrictive.

  • Stack Height and drop: Similar to the previous version, the Speed 5 has a stack height of 36mm in the heel and 28mm in the forefoot, giving an 8mm drop.

What types of runs is this shoe made for?

The best thing about the Saucony Endorphin Speed range is its versatility. This shoe can be used for easy jogs, long progression runs, tempo runs, speed sessions and even races.

Is it true to size?

Based on my experience with Saucony, all their shoes are true to size. The updated mesh upper provides a more accommodating fit, with a slightly roomier toe box that runners with wider feet seem to find even more comfortable.

How much does it cost?

The Saucony Endorphin Speed 4 retails at £180.00. In a few months hopefully, it will be easier to find it discounted on shoe retailers such as Pro Direct Running or Sportsshoes.

What are the key differences between the Endorphin Speed 3 and 4?

In a nutshell, here how the Endorphin Speed 4 is different to the precedent version:

  • Weight: The Speed 4 is slightly heavier than the Speed 3, weighing approximately 245g compared to the Speed 4 (237g) in a UK size 9.

  • Sockliner: The Speed 4 features a thicker sockliner for better cushioning.

  • Upper: The Speed 4 has a thinner tongue, more breathable holes and a lacing eyelet around the top of the arch.

  • Midsole Plate: The Speed 4 features a re-engineered winged nylon plate designed to come closer to the foot in the midsection, aiming to enhance stability and support.

Unsponsored review of the Saucony Endorphin Speed 4

When I first got my hands on the Saucony Endorphin Speed 3, I fell in love with its springy, responsive feel. Naturally, I wanted to replace them with the exact same pair when they wore out. Unfortunately, they were becoming impossible to find, so I had to upgrade to the Endorphin Speed 4.

Despite some differences in design, the Speed 4 doesn’t feel drastically different when I run in it. I noticed a bit more padding around the heel, which adds to the comfort. While the shoe looks bulkier, it’s just as responsive and springy as its predecessor. I’d also say that I feel more stable in the Speed 4 in wet conditions.

The only downside is that the mesh fabric on the upper doesn’t seem significantly sturdier than the Speed 3’s upper, which developed a hole by my big toe before the outsole even began to show wear. Time will tell if the Speed 4 holds up better in this regard.

How I’ve been using the Endorphin Speed 4

I wear this shoe several times a week, and it has proven to be an excellent all-rounder. Personally, I use them for:

  • Speed sessions: I prefer avoiding carbon-plated shoes for training, and the nylon plate in the Speed 4 provides just the right amount of boost without being “too helpful”.

  • Tempo runs: The springy midsole and responsive design make it ideal for maintaining a steady, faster pace.

  • Long progression runs: When my long runs require picking up the pace, the Speed 4 transitions seamlessly.

It’s also my go-to shoe when I’m going away. If I have to travel light and can only bring one pair of running shoes, I’ll take the Speed 4. It performs well across the board, from easy runs to speed workouts.
