RunThrough Battersea Park London half-marathon race review: should you book it?

I recently completed the RunThrough Battersea Park half-marathon race in London and here are my thoughts on this event. I hope you’ll find this helpful if you’re considering signing up to the next edition!

Please note, I did this race in May 2022. Some of my comments may not apply to future editions of this race as some things might change.

RunThrough Battersea Park half-marathon: key information

RunThrough Battersea Park half-marathon is one of Runthrough’s key races in London, with several editions per year.

What time does it start?

The race starts at 9:30am and there is a 3 hour cut-off time.

Where does it start and finish?

Both start and finish lines are on the Central avenue but at different spots which are clearly indicated.

How much does the entry cost?

The standard entry is £30. It includes the medal as well as water on course and at the finish, plus post-race snacks and free race photos.

Where to pick up your race number?

The race numbers are usually assigned on the day. Simply go to the event HQ at the Battersea Park bandstand to pick up your race number and your timing chip (to attach on your shoe) before 9am.

Can you get a PB at RunThrough Battersea Park half-marathon?

Absolutely! Battersea Park is as flat as it gets and the race is 8.75 laps inside the park. I beat my previous PB by almost a minute at this race.

You can see more details on my Strava. Here is the map of the course:

The positives

  • It’s a flat course with huge PB potential.

  • The lap format means that you get to see your friends/family supporting you 8 times and they can hand you fuel and drinks as needed.

  • Even if it’s a sunny day the big trees provide a lot of shade, the heat shouldn’t be too much of an issue.

  • There’s plenty of space to warm up and cool down inside the park.

  • There are public toilets not so far from the race HQ (although RunThrough set up portable toilets as well to avoid queues)

  • The RunThrough team and marshals are amazing, very supportive crew!

The negatives

  • If you’re not having the best day, the lap format might not make it any easier. I found it quite tough towards the end and the temptation to stop was higher.

  • The GPS is not accurate in some sections of the park, I quickly realised that I couldn’t rely on it too much as it was underestimating my pace. I would suggest only checking your watch when it laps a K (or mile) so you know if you’re on track.

  • The park stays open to the public and it gets quite busy mid-morning. There are signs to separate runners from the crowds and you just have to keep left, but there’s a risk of people crossing the path in front of you with their kids and dogs.

  • The photos are included in the entry price but they can be a hit or miss, there’s no guarantee that you’ll be photographed.

Overall it was a great experience and despite the mental challenge of running so many laps, I’m very glad I did it and of course really happy with my new PB!
