Nike Women's Pegasus 40 review: should you get them?

I had the opportunity to test out the Pegasus 40, the latest version of Nike’s popular Pegasus range. Here’s everything you need to know about these shoes and my honest review.

This is a collaboration with Nike but as always, this review reflects my own opinions.

The Nike Pegasus 40

One of Nike’s staples, the Pegasus is a road running shoe that offers neutral support and is suitable for both forefoot and heel strikers.

This shoe is mainly designed for easy runs, short or long. It has medium cushioning to take off the impact and protect your heels.

Key figures

  • Drop: The Pegasus 40 has a 10mm drop, with 33mm in the heel and 23mm in the forefoot.

  • Weight: The shoe weighs 240g to 250g for women’s sizes, around 300g for the men’s biggest sizes.

  • Price: The Pegasus 40 retails at £119.95. Compared to some other road running shoes such as the Invincible 3, it’s relatively affordable.

What are the main features of the Nike Pegasus 40?

The Pegasus 40 has many similar features to the previous versions but has had some upgrades to make it even more comfortable.

The shoe is equipped with Nike React lightweight foam which offers medium cushioning, softening the impact as you’re running on hard surfaces.

The React technology teams up with two Zoom Air units in the forefoot and the heel for a springier, bouncier ride and enhanced responsiveness.

A significant area of focus compared to previous versions was the inside of the shoe. Breathability and comfort are improved especially on the most sensitive areas, heels and toes, with a circular pattern that adapts to the foot.

The midfoot strap has been redesigned to fit all foot arches and make the Pegasus 40 fit like a glove.

My honest review of the Nike Pegasus 40

I was really looking forward to trying the Pegasus 40 as I previously had the Pegasus 37 and 38 which I really enjoyed.

I clocked a lot of miles in these and even did my first 10k race in the Pegasus 37 because I didn’t have any speed shoes at the time.

I see the Pegasus as my trusty pair of easy running shoes, that won’t let me down. When I try a new pair of shoes, I always keep the first run short, but with the Pegasus 40 I knew that I wouldn’t have any issues and I did 16km with them, fresh out the box.

Comfort and fit

What I love about the Pegasus in general and this applies to the latest version, is that Nike keeps improving the shoe and fine tuning it, but you still feel like you’re running in Pegasus. You have the same level of comfort and you know what to expect.

This is a huge contrast compared to the Invincible, as I personally felt like the Invincible 3 was a totally different shoe to the previous version and I had to get used to a brand new feeling.

I felt very stable and comfortable from the first strides in the Pegasus 40, but I wouldn’t have expected anything less. Nike however went up a level with this new version, with more attention given to the inside of the shoe to make it even more “hugging” but still breathable.

When you thought the Pegasus couldn’t get any more comfortable, the Pegasus 40 comes out with improved internal lining and a good amount of padding around the collar, which I am here for.

Responsiveness

The Nike React foam midsole isn’t as foamy as the Invincible, it’s a completely different cushioning but it still does a great job at taking some of the impact.

I can tell that a road running shoe isn’t cushioned enough for me when my heels hurt, which isn’t the case with the Pegasus.

The Air Zoom components add some extra bounce and the responsiveness of the Pegasus has improved over the years, but I wouldn’t use them for a speed session or a race (now that I have specific shoes for that!).

I’ll keep the Pegasus 40 for my short and long runs at easy pace, possibly for some steady pace too.

Should you get the Nike Pegasus 40?

To sum it up, the Pegasus really is the shoe that never gets old, keeps getting better!

If you’re looking for a new pair of shoe for your easy runs, I’d highly recommend the Pegasus 40. They have a lot of great features and are great value for money.

If you previously had Pegasus shoes and enjoyed them, you’ll definitely get on well with the Pegasus 40!

Edit: The Pegasus 40 has now been replaced by it’s successor, the Pegasus 41. Find them here.
