Precision Fuel gels and chews unsponsored runner's review

A few months ago, I decided to order some Precision Fuel gels and chews to see for myself what the hype was all about. Here’s my honest, unsponsored Precision Fuel & Hydration review - from a runner’s point of view.

About Precision Fuel & Hydration

Founded in 2011 by Andy Blow, Precision Fuel & Hydration emerged from a personal quest to optimise hydration strategies for endurance sports.

With a background in Sport and Exercise Science and a history of podium finishes in short course triathlon racing, Andy experienced firsthand the challenges of managing hydration, especially in extreme conditions, leading to cramping and more severe issues.

Andy’s quest to refine his hydration strategy led him to collaborate with Dr. Raj Jutley, a heart surgeon who introduced him to the concept of Sweat Testing. By highlighting the significant variability in sweat and sodium losses among athletes, this concept showed that a one size fits all approach simply doesn’t work.

Together, they developed what was originally Precision Hydration, leveraging the patented Sweat Testing technology and creating their own range of electrolytes to start with.

It wasn’t long until they began working with professional sports teams and endurance athletes.

Today, Precision Fuel & Hydration offers tailored fuelling strategies and a wide range of products supporting the needs and goals of every athlete, from amateur runners to professional triathletes.

Is Precision Fuel & Hydration a vegan brand?

Yes, Precision Fuel & Hydration products are vegan.

Unsponsored review of Precision Fuel energy gels and chews

Here’s what I’ve tried from the brand so far and my honest thoughts. If you’ve been following my running journey over on Youtube, you’ll have a pretty good idea of how highly I rate these products!

PF 30 Chew review

These energy chews have a high carb to weight ratio, perfect for fuelling on the go. Each serving contains 2 chews that deliver a total of 30g of carbs.

They come in 2 flavours: the Original which has a very subtle citrus taste and the Mint & Lemon combo which is more pronounced.

The chews are free from artificial ingredients. They don’t contain electrolytes nor caffeine.

Energy chews are probably the nutrition item I use the most in my training. I’ll have some before a short morning run if I’ve not had breakfast, before a track workout or even a race.

What I love the most about the PF Chews and Precision Fuel in general is that I’m not experiencing any flavour fatigue, because the taste is so subtle.

The texture is great, not too sticky, easy to chew and it doesn’t get stuck in my teeth unlike other brands I’ve tried.

Plus, they sit very well on my stomach, even if I have them just before I start running. As someone who’s nervous about feeling nauseous on a run, I have full confidence in the PF chews and I know that I’ll feel perfectly fine.

I like both the Original and Mint & Lemon combo (with a slight preference for the lemon chew which tastes super refreshing).

RRP: £27.99 for 15 servings

PF 30 Gel review

Each PF 30 gel delivers 30g of carbs with a 2:1 glucose to fructose ratio to optimise absorption. They come in a neutral “Original” flavour with a very slight hint of citrus.

This product is Informed Sport certified and free from artificial ingredients.

I am someone who’s been struggling to take on fuel during long runs and taking ages to finish a gel. I wanted to try the PF 30 gels because I had only heard positive feedback.

The very first time I had a Precision Fuel gel, I couldn’t believe how quickly I finished it, without even needing water because of the non-sticky texture. I originally thought that I wouldn’t really enjoy a “tasteless” gel, turns out it actually works better for me than gels with a stronger flavour.

I had no stomach discomfort and it was the very first time that I genuinely enjoyed taking a gel. As I am writing this post, I’m just starting a half marathon training block and this time around I’ll be using PF30 gels both in training and during the race.

I know already that I’ll do a much better job at fuelling than I did during previous half marathon races!

RRP: £29.99 for 15 gels

PF 30 Caffeine Gel review

The caffeine version has the same composition and texture as the original gel, delivering 30g of carbs with a 2:1 glucose to fructose ratio and an Informed Sport certified formula.

Each PF 30 Caffeine Gel provides you with 100mg of caffeine per serving.

I’ve only recently had my first PF 30 Caffeine Gel as I’m thinking of using one during my half marathon race. As a coffee lover, I am used to caffeine and someone who’s more sensitive to it might have another experience, but I personally didn’t experience any GI distress, it felt like taking a normal gel.

There was also no bitter aftertaste, I wouldn’t have known that there was caffeine if it wasn’t written on the sachet.

RRP: £39.99 for 15 gels

Final words

To conclude, I’m really glad that I decided to try Precision Fuel gels and chews and I get why so many endurance athletes rely on these products.

If you’re getting sick of gels that taste too sweet or are still looking for something that your stomach can handle, I can only recommend giving Precision Fuel and Hydration a go!
