Trying a vegan crumble at Humble Crumble, Spitalfields | Vegan in London
I moved back to London and I’m excited to make the most of it, including experiencing the vegan food scene. I recently spent a day exploring Spitalfields and stopped at Humble Crumble for a sweet treat. Here’s what I thought of their vegan crumble option.
What is Humble Crumble?
Take a classic dessert, add a twist to it and serve it in a cup, ready to go. There you have it, the world-first crumble bar, Humble Crumble.
You can find Humble Crumble at Old Spitalfields Market (where I went) and at Borough Market.
Sustainability is part of Humble Crumble’s mission and they work with suppliers that share their values. For instance, their flour supplier is carbon negative, whilst their vanilla is “sourced from an orchard which reinvests profits into employment in the village”.
So how does it work? You pick your fruit base, they add the crumbly bits then your chosen topping and any additional rose petals, nuts or other instagrammable toppings you fancy.
Vegan options at Humble Crumble
There are more non-vegan options (sadly), but you can still get a great vegan crumble. The fruit base is vegan, there is a vegan shortbread crumble and a vegan vanilla custard.
One can hope that they’ll bring out more vegan toppings in the future, it would be pretty nice to have a vegan marshmallow option.
Is it worth it?
I paid £6.50 for a regular size with the fruit (I went for the berry option), crumble, custard and additional rose petal toppings (which are free). It would have been £9 for a large size cup.
I very much enjoyed this dessert, the warm custard combined with the shortbread and berries tasted really good. It’s a great treat when you’re in the area and have a sweet tooth, but once you’ve tried it once it might not be something you’d travel across London for.
It’s also not the cheapest dessert. Yes, it’s really tasty but I’d say the price reflects the concept and the experience more than the pretty standard dessert itself. But it’s exactly what this is about: an experience and a cool insta shot, and I’m glad I ticked it off my London foodie bucket list!
