Nike React Pegasus Trail 4 Gore-Tex review : good for beginner trail runners?

I’m a road runner, but lately I’ve found myself wanting to add some variety in my running and to get on the trails. Especially now that I have a proper pair of trail running shoes, the Nike React Pegasus Trail 4 Gore-Tex.

Here’s everything you need to know about the new Nike React Pegasus Trail shoes and my honest review.

This is a collaboration with Nike. This review reflects my own opinions after testing them on the trails.

Nike React Pegasus Trail 4 Gore-Tex: from road to trails

A dual purpose shoe

The latest Nike React Pegasus Trail version allows you to smoothly switch from roads to trails.

Thanks to smartly positioned rubber around the front of the shoe (and less rubber on the outsoles than pure trail running shoes), you can comfortably run on tarmac, but then have enough grip and traction when you hit the trails.

Made for running in wet conditions

They are equipped with a waterproof GORE-TEX layer along the upper to keep your feet dry at all times. It’s super flexible and lightweight, not taking anything away from the reliable comfort of the Pegasus.

Nike React Technology

These trail shoes also feature Nike React technology with a responsive foam to keep you stable on all terrains.

How much do they cost?

Both women’s and men’s shoes retail at £144.95 and they come in two colourways: a multi-coloured version and a black version.

My honest review of the Nike React Pegasus Trail 4 Gore-Tex

I’m a beginner trail runner and I’ve not tackled much elevation yet (London isn’t the hot spot for hilly trails!) so I can’t tell you what these shoes are worth on very technical trails.

But after a couple short runs and an 18km long run in Epping Forest - the morning after a night of torrential rain - I can for sure share my experience of the Pegasus Trail 4 on all sorts of wet grounds, from gravel to muddy, grassy paths.

4 things I like about the Nike React Pegasus Trail 4 Gore-Tex:

  • The higher ankle coverage comes in pretty handy. Dirt, gravel and other debris don’t get inside the shoes.

  • I can confirm that the GORE-TEX layer does a great job at keeping the feet dry! I learnt that after stepping on some puddles.

  • I love the fact that you can switch from road to trails. Like most people I have to start on the road before finding some trails and I feel very comfortable running on tarmac with these shoes. They will also be great for “trail-like” and multi-terrain parkruns such as Ally Pally or Hampstead Heath in London, especially on a rainy Saturday.

  • Being very used to tarmac, I was quite worried about slipping over on a muddy path, but turns out, the React foam combined with the solid grip and rubber keep you pretty stable even on the most uneven terrains!

Do I recommend them?

I have been getting on really well with these shoes and they make me want to do more trail running. I see them as a great shoe to ease yourself into trail running.

You can also use them on the road, for instance on a very rainy day for better grip, so even if you occasionally go on the trails, you’ll get plenty of use out of these shoes.

I would absolutely recommend giving the Nike React Pegasus Trail 4 a go! You can check out the whole Trail shoe range here.
