Nike Invincible 3 VS Invincible 2: what's changed? Nike Invincible 3 review

I had the opportunity to receive the Nike Invincible 3, the latest version of Nike’s max cushioned road running shoes. Here’s how they compare to the Invincible 2 and my honest thoughts about these shoes.

This is a collaboration with Nike but this review reflects my own opinions, as always.

The Nike Invincible 3

The Invincible 3 is Nike’s most cushioned road-running shoe to date, aiming to replace the outgoing.

It’s packed with Nike’s incredibly bouncy and responsive ZoomX foam, making it the perfect shoe for smooth and comfortable easy paced and recovery runs, short or long.

The upper has the same breathable, Flyknit mesh as the previous version.

For a Women’s size 9, the shoe weighs 258g and has a drop of 9mm. It’s the same drop for a Men’s size 9, with a weight of 310g.

The Nike Invincible 3 runs true to size. The shoe retails at £169.95.

Nike Invincible 3 VS Nike Invincible 2

Here’s what has changed in the Invincible 3 compared to the previous version.

PS: check out my detailed review of the Invincible 2 here.

  • The Invincible 3 is slightly heavier than the 2, when a lot of runners were hoping for a lighter shoe. The ZoomX foam may be light, but there’s a lot of it in the Invincible, which will impact the overall weight. Now we’re only talking about a couple extra grams vs the outgoing version.

  • There are actually taller foam stacks in the Invincible 3 for extra cushioning.

  • The midsole is a little wider, making the shoe less flexible which can make you feel more stable on uneven roads.

  • The outsole “waffle” looks different, potentially contributing to more stability as well.

  • The pull tab is another addition.

  • The laces are thinner. I personally don’t have an issue with the thick laces on the Invincible 2 but it’s something that bothered some runners.

  • Finally, the back of the foot is where the most noticeable change is. It is much less padded and looks more like a sock liner. It makes the shoe look sleeker, but it also gives a very different feel when running.

My honest review of the Nike Invincible 3

The first few runs

Whilst I immediately got on well with the Invincible 2, my very first run in the Invincible 3 wasn’t as smooth.

This is mainly due to how different the back of the shoe is. I’m not used to the sock liner and at first I felt like my heel was slipping at every stride. It’s definitely a different feeling compared to the Invincible 2, which takes a few runs to get used to.

To me this is the most noticeable difference between the two versions when I run, and I personally prefer the tighter lockdown offered by the Invincible 2.

To me this is the only downside of the Nike Invincible 3, but I’ve still been been enjoying running in them and I still very much love the bouncy and responsive ZoomX foam! The cushioning makes you feel like you’re running on pillows and it’s incredibly comfortable.

I felt already pretty stable in the Invincible 2, and the wider midsole of the Invincible 3 adds even more stability.

Should you get the Nike Invincible 3?

If you have a pair of Invincible 2, wait until you have to retire them to upgrade. Unless the new features sound like you’d enjoy them more than the 2 (mainly the sock liner and the wider midsole), I don’t think the improvement between the 2 and 3 is so significant that you must upgrade straight away.

But if you’ve never owned a pair of Invincible and need new road running shoes, chances are you’ll love the max-cushioned Invincible 3 and you’ll be blown away by the ZoomX foam!
