ASICS Metaspeed Sky review *unsponsored*

I had been wanting to try the the ASICS Metaspeed Sky for a while, so when I spotted them on sale, I didn’t think twice and ordered a pair. Here’s my honest, unsponsored ASICS Metaspeed Sky review.

ASICS Metaspeed Sky: facts and figures

Find the ASICS Metaspeed Sky currently available, or try Sportsshoes for potential discounts on old versions.

The Metaspeed Sky is a carbon-plated road racing shoe designed for neutral runners. It can be used for a wide range of race distances from the 5k to the marathon.

It has a 5mm heel to toe drop and weighs around 210-230g for the average men & women sizes. In my small size (UK 4.5), the shoe weighs 152g.

ASICS shoes tend to run small and I’d highly recommend going at least half a size up. I wear UK 4.5 in ASICS and UK 4 in all the other running shoe brands.

Metaspeed Sky VS Metaspeed Edge

The Metaspeed Sky is a shoe for stride-style runners who see an increase in their stride length when they pick up the pace, whilst their cadence remains the same.

On the other hand, the Metaspeed Edge is geared towards cadence-style runners who see significant changes in their cadence as their pace increases.

Where to find the ASICS Metaspeed Sky?

The Metaspeed Sky is harder to find now that the new version, the Metaspeed Sky + has been around for a little while.

Try Pro Direct, Sportsshoes or check the current versions available on ASICS

How much do the ASICS Metaspeed Sky cost?

The original price is £225, however you can now get them for less than £150 on the retailers listed above.

Main characteristics of the ASICS Metaspeed Sky

FF BLAST TURBO™ cushioning

The lightweight FF Blast Turbo cushioning compresses as you land then quickly bounces back to allow a super responsive take-off. It is also designed to help reduce the impact and protect your joints.

Curved midsole

The midsole features a curved design to help reduce ankle flexion, which helps you conserve more energy when running at race pace.

The midsole is also equipped with a lightweight carbon plate that runs from the mid to the front foot.

Engineered mesh upper

The mesh on the upper part fits like a second skin, allowing your foot to move without restriction.

The breathable material encourages ventilation to avoid your feet getting too warm and the no-sew construction reduces the risk of chafing.

ASICSGRIP Outsole

The ASICSGRIP outsole provides a solid grip and enough traction to help you tackle tight corners and keep you grounded on wet roads. The rubber is also abrasion-resistant and designed to maintain its shape overtime.

What I like the most about the ASICS Metaspeed Sky

I was extremely surprised with how comfortable they felt from the get go. It took me several attempts to get used to my previous pair of carbon plated shoes (Nike Alphafly) and I expected the same scenario with the Metaspeed.

However, my very first session went really well and I didn’t feel any pain or discomfort. So I decided to use them for a 5k race a few days later, where I went sub 20 for the very first time. A couple weeks later, I even ran a 19:01 5k at Parkrun in these shoes!

I personally find that they do a better job at taking off some of the impact than my OG pair of Alphafly. They are also 10g lighter.

I really enjoy the padding around the collar, just the right amount for comfort without being too heavy or restrictive.

The upper of this shoe is truly breathable, making it a great shoe for Summer races. The mesh is so light that it’s see-through. There are also small holes at the back of the shoe and on the tongue for increased airflow.

Another great feature is the grippy outsole, which I find provides good traction on wet roads. I feel more stable and in control in the Metaspeed than the Alphafly when it rains.

I wouldn’t have bought them full price, but seeing them at £134.99 online was a bargain I couldn’t miss out on, and I’m really glad I ordered them.

I’ve been loving doing my speed workouts in the Metaspeed Sky and I’ve had a streak of great races in them.

Should you upgrade to the ASICS Metaspeed Sky +?

The Metaspeed Sky + was released last Summer and introduced as an improved version of the OG model. Some of the key differences are:

  • More FF BLAST TURBO™ foam

  • A different positioning of the carbon plate in the midsole for optimised propulsion

  • A more breathable and supportive upper material

If you’ve had and loved the Metaspeed Sky but have worn them out and need a new pair of racing shoes, you could definitely consider upgrading to the Sky +.

However, if you are new to the Metaspeed range like I was, it may be wiser to go for the OG Metaspeed Sky whilst they’re still available and quite a bargain!

They may not be the latest version, but they’re still incredible shoes and it’s not always worth paying full price for a brand new model with only minor differences.

I’m personally really happy with my Metaspeed Sky and glad I got them for only £134.99! If you’ve been wanting to get them, hurry before they go out of stock everywhere!
